Energy Efficiency
Getting replacement windows for your Tampa Bay home can help you improve your home’s energy efficiency by better insulating against outside temperatures and the heat of Florida sunlight.
Hurricane Resistance
Impact window replacement helps protect your home against the incredible wind pressure and flying debris that often accompanies major storms like the hurricanes that threaten Tampa Bay.
Curb Appeal
Adding custom replacement windows for your home can enhance your home’s curb appeal. Be the envy of your neighborhood and enhance the potential resale value of your Tampa Bay home with new windows.
Home Security
Replacing your home’s windows with impact windows can help improve your security against intrusion attempts by would-be break-in artists by simply not breaking easily when exposed to heavy impacts.
Insurance Savings
Did you know that installing impact windows can reduce your homeowner’s insurance costs in Tampa Bay? By using impact windows, you can reduce your home’s risk profile, which earns insurance discounts.
Noise Reduction
Using double-paned impact windows with laminate interlayers can massively reduce the amount of noise that penetrates into your home. This can reduce noise levels from the outside by more than half!
Why Impact Windows Are a Must-Have in Tampa Bay
Tampa Bay is a ‘Hurricane Prone’ area and much of the greater Tampa Bay area falls within a Wind Borne Debris Region (WBD), where Florida Building Code ordinances dictate that structures be built to withstand sustained winds in excess of 140 miles per hour.
Impact windows are a must for Tampa Bay not only because they’re necessary in order to meet FBC guidelines, but because they can help protect you, your family, and your property from the damage that frequent hurricanes can cause.
Impact windows feature numerous innovations that make them much more resistant to strong wind pressure and sudden impacts than regular windows, such as having tempered glass, flexible laminate interlayers, double- or even triple-paned glass, reinforced frames, and more.
In addition to being incredibly resilient against impacts, impact windows are also great for your day-to-day. Double-paned windows do a much better job of suppressing outside noise than single-paned windows, helping to shut out the loud noise of city traffic and more.

I reached out to Karoly for new sliding windows in my florida room and two exterior doors. Karoly came out and spent quite a while getting all the measurements right. That makes you feel good. When the installers came out, two days and done. Windows look great and the doors are solid and close tight. Everything is now impact and hurricane rated. I got my insurance discount. I am very hard to please as I pretty much expect close to perfection. From a serious point I just want a TEAM that cares and gives it their best. Mistakes happen. However today I had Hurricane windows placed by Karoly. Actually from the very beginning it was like dealing with a family. In all my dealing with different companies A/C etc they far outshined any company I have ever dealt with. My techs were Vili, Zoli and Christian. They gave 150%, were very clean, cared about our house and did exquisite workmanship. 1,000% incredible and guess what they are not my relatives. LOLPosted on Google![]()

I will never be able to brag enough about how superior this company is. My husband and I interviewed at least seven window companies, all full of similar products of PGT or other hurricane safe Windows. We became window experts on our own with the knowledge we absorbed comparing apples to apples. Karoly was the final company we met with and Austin presentation was simple and he showed us a sample and did all the measurements. He explained the Simonton brand very well and the warranty they offer cannot be beat. We visited their showroom and met with Jesse to really look at products. Our decision was quick and easy and the price was better than their competitors. We completed all the paperwork with Richy and Angela and the rest of the wonderful staff. Installation day came and we met the fantastic installers that were so kind and clean. In 3 days our job was done. The day after that inspector came and passed us and one week later Karoly came back to complete final installation of some parts and now it’s all finished. These windows have changed our home completely. Not only did we work with the best contractor and save money we also gained a more beautiful home and it’s so quiet! No barking dogs or loud traffic or thunder anymore just peaceful tranquility!!! Thank you everyone at Karoly for making us so happy!!! I promise to call you again for all my other houses!! This was the best thing we’ve ever done without a doubt . Sincerely, Cheryl & Doug Sigmon+2Posted on Google![]()

After researching a few companies, I decided to go with Karoly. They replaced 19 windows and 3 sliders with Sinomton Stormbreaker Plus 300VL and Simonton Maxview. I enjoyed reading the information they had on their website and pleased to see this is a family owned business with emphasis on quality work and customer satisfaction. Employees were pleasant and professional and answered my questions. It has only been almost 2 years since installation and from my experience thus far, I would highly recommend Karoly.Posted on Google![]()

I couldn't be happier with my experience with Karoly Windows & Doors! They replaced all of my windows along with two doors, and the entire experience exceeded my expectations. From start to finish, everyone was professional, friendly, and truly cared about doing the job right. The installation crews were outstanding. They were hardworking, respectful of my home, paid attention to every detail, and the quality of their workmanship was exceptional. I'm extremely pleased with the quality of the window replacement, the beautiful new doors, and the finished results. I was so impressed with the company that I've already recommended Karoly Windows & Doors to several of my neighbors. It's refreshing to work with a company that delivers exactly what they promise. Tampa Bay Window Replacement FAQs
How Much Does It Cost to Replace Windows in Tampa Bay?
Window replacement can be costly. It’s why we partner with financial institutions to provide window financing options. However, the cost of a new window replacement in Tampa Bay can vary depending on a few factors such as:
- The window brand (some brands may cost more than others).
- The size of the window opening (bigger windows tend to cost more).
- Where the window is being installed (higher floor installations tend to cost more).
- The type of window being installed (some windows have more complex installation processes than others).
- Any optional features the window may have (extra soundproofing, specialized tints, hardware finishes, etc.).
On average, an impact window can cost over $1,400 per window, with whole home window replacement services easily exceeding $30,000 for homes with lots of windows in hurricane-prone areas requiring impact windows.
When Should I Replace My Windows?
So, when should you replace your windows? A common piece of advice is to replace windows after 20 years, but that’s a generalization that doesn’t always work. Some window materials may deteriorate much faster than others in certain environments.
For example, many metal window frames are more susceptible to corrosion in coastal environments because of the saltwater in the air. Wood may rot if it absorbs too much water. Meanwhile, pure polyvinylchloride window frames will not be nearly as harshly impacted by salt corrosion.
So, rather than following a simple 20-year rule of thumb, it’s better to carefully check your windows for issues that indicate you need to replace them. Some telltale signs of a window in need of replacement include:
- Cracks in the window glass (may be indicative of too much pressure on the window frame).
- Warping/distortion of the window frame.
- Discoloration of window components.
- Drafty windows.
- Persistent pest infestations around the windowsill.
- Issues maintaining a comfortable temperature in your home (this may indicate a lack of insulation for your windows or of the home in general, but window/door openings are a highly likely culprit).
However, for many windows, if they’re more than 20 years old, they will likely be facing one or more of the above issues. The rule of thumb exists for a reason.
What Is the My Safe Florida Home Grant?
My Safe Florida Home, or MSFH, is a program from the Florida Government that offers rebates for homeowners who make qualifying wind mitigation improvements to their homes. The program provides up to $10,000 in rebates when you make $15,000 or more in approved wind mitigation upgrades.
The grant is retroactive, so you first need to make and pay for the improvements before you can apply for the rebate. There are also multiple qualification criteria to consider for the program, including:
- Income Requirements. Applicants must be “moderate income” earners meaning they earn up to 120% of the median income for their area.
- Pre-Application Wind Mitigation Inspection. Homeowners need to put their home through an inspection to determine if they can make qualifying improvements.
- Getting a Quote from an MSFH Program-Approved Vendor. To qualify for rebates, applicants must have a quote for service from a reliable vendor approved by the MSFH program.
- Post-Work Inspection. After the work is completed, an MSFH-approved inspection must clear the work as being completed per program requirements.
Is It Worth It to Replace 20-Year-Old Windows?
Short answer: YES. If you have windows that are decades old, even if they’re in good condition, you’re missing out on 20+ years of innovation and updates in window features and designs. Window manufacturers are constantly seeking new ways to improve their products to distinguish themselves from their competitors and what may have been the style 20+ years ago may not be in fashion today.
Newer windows will often have better energy efficiency innovations than older windows, even when they’re from the same manufacturer. Newer designs and engineering can lead to subtle, but significant improvements to a window’s performance. For example, newer low-e coatings for windows may have subtler tints, making for clearer windows that let in visible light while blocking more ultraviolet and infrared rays that heat up the home in summer.
Also, the quality of impact-resistant windows may change over time as chemists formulate new compounds to use for windows and engineers optimize designs for maximum impact resistance.
They may even come out with whole new features that enhance the utility of your window… though we can’t spoil any upcoming surprises that we hope to feature in future window installations.
Do My Windows Have to Be Impact Windows in Tampa Bay?
Yes. The Florida Building Code (FBC) Residential 8th Edition specifies that a “wall assembly shall be capable of resisting an impact without puncture” and specifies wind speeds and associated design pressure requirements. This applies to windows.
While there is a “25% rule” that exempts homeowners from having to use impact windows if they’re replacing less than 25% of the total surface area of their glazing, that exception has a lot of strings attached and the risks of using non-impact windows in Tampa Bay are just too high to justify relying on them.
Impact windows are built to withstand extreme impacts, passing Small and Large Missile Impact D testing standards.
Under the Large Missile Impact test, a 2×4 is fired at the window’s glass and frame several times. If the window develops an air leak, it fails the test and cannot be called an impact window.
Under the Small Missile Impact test, three sets of ten small steel balls are fired at the window at a high speed. Again, if the window develops an air leak during subsequent cyclic pressure testing, it will fail the test and not earn the ‘impact’ classification.
When looking at impact windows, be sure to look for the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) sticker and check the window’s design pressure ratings to see if it’s sufficient to be considered impact-resistant.
What Makes for an Energy-Efficient Window?
How can you identify an energy-efficient window? When you’re looking for increased energy efficiency for your home, it’s important to get windows that will do an excellent job of insulating your home from outside temperatures and blocking the heat of the sun.
There are a few ways to identify an energy-efficient window:
First, the NFRC sticker on the window will have a set of energy efficiency metrics that let you know how good the window is at preventing air transfer and solar heat gain:
- U Factor. This is a number, typically on a scale of 0.2 to 1.2, that indicates how well the window insulates your home. The lower the number, the more completely the window will block thermal transfer between your home and the outdoors.
- Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC).This is a number on a scale of 0 to 1 that tells you how much of the sun’s heat will get through the window glass. The lower the number, the smaller the percentage of the sun’s heat will get through the window.
- Air Leakage. This measures how much air can pass through the window when it’s closed, expressed in cubic feet per minute. An energy-efficient window should have an air leakage rating of 0.3 f3/m or less to be considered energy efficient, as higher leakage ratings would let too much air transfer to keep your home’s temperature stable.
In addition to checking the NFRC sticker, check the window’s construction. Energy-efficient windows tend to have certain characteristics, such as using two or more glass panes with air gaps, vinyl window frames, and even low-e glass coatings that may give the window a slight tint or sheen.
Which Is Better: Vinyl or Aluminum Windows?
Aluminum windows are incredibly tough. It’s why so many impact windows are made using the material. However, in the Tampa Bay area, there are a few things that might make aluminum windows less than ideal.
For example, aluminum is susceptible to corrosion when exposed to salty ocean breezes, causing unsightly pitting that negatively affects the curb appeal of your home. This pitting and rusting can also impact the longevity of your new windows as the aluminum corrodes.
Vinyl, on the other hand, is perfectly resistant to saltwater intrusion and corrosion, and will remain in good condition even if liberally soaked with saltwater. This alone makes vinyl impact windows the best replacement windows for Tampa Bay homes.
Another factor that makes vinyl windows superior to aluminum ones is that vinyl is vastly better at insulating your home than aluminum. Thermal conductivity is a material property that measures how easily heat passes through a material measured in Watts per meter Kelvin (W/m K).
Aluminum has a thermal conductivity of 237 W/m K. Meanwhile, polyvinylchloride, or PVC (the material vinyl windows are made of), has a thermal conductivity of 0.19 W/m K. This means that aluminum transfers over 1,247 times as much heat as vinyl does.
So, when the hot Florida sun hits your window, a vinyl window will transfer a fraction of a percent of the heat that an aluminum window would. This contributes to energy efficiency in your home by preventing temperature changes that your home’s air conditioning system will have to compensate for.
Why Use Custom Windows for My Impact Window Replacement in Tampa Bay?
For many homeowners, custom windows are going to be the best option for their window replacement because they may not have standard-sized window openings. Sometimes, building frames may settle over time, altering the size and shape of a window opening. If a standard window is shoved into the opening without accounting for this, it can lead to a poor fit or even damage to the new window.
If the window isn’t a standard size, getting a custom window may be necessary just to get a new window that will fit the opening at all. While a skilled installer can overcome small discrepancies in window openings by using shims, window bucks, or trimming the window or opening, a significant size difference of more than ⅛” can be impossible to address without compromising the window, the opening, or simply having to order an appropriately-sized replacement.
Another benefit of getting custom windows is that it helps ensure that you get windows with all of the features you want.
Getting non-custom windows and simply picking up what’s available at your local big box store may be fast, but it can mean forgoing great energy efficiency and convenience features that you might need to save money on your electricity bill.
Also, when you order custom windows, you can choose the finish and colors you want, as manufacturers will make them to order in accordance with your preferences. This includes getting custom hardware with different finishes to either blend in with your home or to stand out more.
