Every year, the state of Florida is subjected to hurricane season, a period of time wherein tropical storms and hurricanes frequently occur and may impact the state. Hurricane impact windows help protect Florida homes from the high winds, heavy rains, and flying debris that accompany major storms.
But, when should you install your hurricane impact windows? Let’s talk about the impact window installation process and when the best time to order yours is.
Here are a few things to consider when choosing when to install hurricane impact windows for your home:
Getting Hurricane Impact Windows When Government Rebates Are Available
When installing hurricane impact windows, one of the biggest considerations is the cost of the installation. It’s a major investment of time and money. However, there are ways to lessen the impact on your home finances.
One way to make installing hurricane impact windows more affordable is to leverage special government programs like My Safe Florida Home. However, not all of these programs are available all of the time.
For example, the MSFH program is accepting applications for the 2026–27 fiscal year. The State prioritizes applicants by income and age, so it pays to apply early.
This program offers eligible homeowners matching grants of up to $10,000 for wind mitigation improvements to their homes, including hurricane impact windows.
However, funding for the program is limited, and grants aren’t guaranteed.
Timing matters for taxes, too. Florida’s home-hardening sales tax refund covers impact windows, impact doors and garage doors bought between July 1, 2026 and June 30, 2029 for an eligible homesteaded home. The refund is capped at $500, and claims are due by September 30, 2029. See Florida DOR Tax Information Publication 26A01-09 and our rebates and savings guide.
Timing your hurricane impact window installation to take advantage of programs like MSFH that give you rebates for installing them can help make it easier to afford. They’re a great opportunity for any Florida homeowner and so timing your installation job to take advantage of them is a great idea.
When You Can Use Hurricane Impact Window Financing Offers
Another good time to buy new windows is when the manufacturer or the installer is offering a special financing offer. Window financing is pretty common, but some financing offers may be better than others.
For example, Karoly Windows is, as of the time of this writing, doing a special financing offer with GreenSky where customers can get their hurricane impact windows installed and not have to make any payments beyond the down payment for up to six months afterwards.
This limited-time offer is a great chance to improve the affordability of installing new impact windows since you can put off making payments for a while.
Although, if you do pay off the window installation loan within that 6-month no payments required period, you won’t have to pay any interest, either (though interest will accrue normally if the loan is not paid off within that 6-month period).
Another potential source of impact window financing you might want to consider is the Florida PACE program.
PACE is a public entity that provides financing options for Florida residents who need money to cover the costs of energy efficiency and hurricane resistance upgrades. Impact-resistant windows are one of the qualifying upgrades that can be approved for PACE program funding.
PACE is available pretty much year-round. There is no timing window for it. However, availability is limited based on your geographic location. As of the time of this writing PACE is unavailable in Pinellas County, but some areas of Pasco and Hillsborough have PACE funding available.
Before Hurricane Season Starts
So far, we’ve talked about the best time to install hurricane impact windows for you financially: such as when it would be easiest to afford the upgrade due to government programs or when financing options make it more affordable to install new windows.
Another good time to install new hurricane windows is early in the year before hurricane season starts. New window installation, especially custom window installation, can take a while since the manufacturer needs to make the windows and installers may have a long queue of clients to perform window installation work for.
By knocking out your hurricane impact window installation request earlier in the year, you can protect your home before the next big storm strikes. The sooner in the year you can schedule your window installation, the better.
Get Your Hurricane Impact Windows Before the Next Big Storm Hits
As the saying goes: There’s no time like the present. When you need new hurricane impact windows, it’s important to get them installed as soon as possible. Waiting for the perfect time to install your new windows could mean having them installed too late to make a difference when you need them to.
So, the best time to install new hurricane windows is as soon as you possibly can, before the next big storm hits. The sooner you can get your new windows installed, the sooner your home will be protected better against extreme wind pressure, flying storm debris, and water intrusion.
Installing impact windows can mean the difference between having a safe and undamaged home and having to spend tens of thousands of dollars on storm damage remediation and having to replace damaged furniture throughout your house.
