The Karoly team often fields questions about the windows we install, the manufacturers of those windows, and the installation process itself. One question a lot of Florida homeowners have about PGT is “what does PGT Windows stand for?”
The literal answer is that it’s an acronym for Progressive Glass Technology, which was the company’s name in 1987. Before it was PGT, the company was called VinylTech, but the name was changed to reflect PGT’s growing library of products.
PGT became the first company to offer a full line of impact-resistant windows and doors in 1996 with the launch of their WinGuard products—a product line that continues to be a market leader in Florida to this day.
Now that the literal meaning is out of the way, what does PGT Windows stand for in a more metaphorical sense? And why does Karoly Windows so often install PGT products for our customers?
What Does PGT Windows Stand For? Quality
PGT Windows has a commitment to providing top-tier quality for homeowners throughout Florida. As they say on their About page, “We build windows and doors for every day and once in a lifetime.”
The mission statement that quote implies is one that we fully support: the drive to make products that are so good and long-lasting that your customers won’t have to worry about replacing them for a literal lifetime.
How Does PGT Windows Assure Top Quality?
So, what does PGT do to ensure that the windows they make are the best they can possibly be and will last a lifetime?
With obsessive product testing.
Every PGT window type is subjected to extensive testing at their own laboratory. Not just physics software simulations, either. They have an actual 2×4 cannon that they use to fire pieces of lumber at their impact windows just to see what happens.
They’ve even had Chris Godwin, wide receiver for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, over to fire the cannon for a fun promotional spot highlighting PGT’s testing facility and crew.
Every aspect of every window is tested repeatedly against different stresses until the PGT team is satisfied that it will last a literal lifetime even when subjected to extreme weather events… which are all too common in Florida!
They even go out of their way to test for things like soundproofing quality so you know exactly how much noise reduction you can expect from your new windows (65%, by the way)
Why Does Karoly Windows & Doors Install PGT Windows?
The big reason why we install PGT windows for our customers is because we know that they’re high quality products. Especially compared to some of the other brands that some window companies settle for installing.
For example, when comparing PGT vs CWS windows, CWS might be cheaper… but that is in every sense of the word. The price is usually lower, but so is the quality, soundproofing, and insulation quality.
We often work with PGT Windows because:
- Our Customers Trust the PGT Windows Brand. Lots of our customers come to us asking about PGT Windows directly, having prior positive experience with the brand.
- They Have Reliable Impact Windows. Because their windows are so thoroughly tested and verified, our installers know that it’s highly unlikely that we’ll get a callback related to some manufacturing flaw in the window.
- High Design Pressure Ratings. PGT makes impact windows and doors that don’t just meet the minimum requirements of the Florida Building Code (FBC), but blow them out of the proverbial water.
- Unique Glass and Finish Options. PGT offers customers lots of different options for their window and door glass in terms of tint colors and styles. From unobtrusive, near-invisible low-e glass coatings to colorful tints, they give customers plenty of ways to customize the appearance of their homes to maximize their curb appeal.
- A Decades-Long Track Record. PGT has been operating in Florida since 1980, and has been providing high-quality products since day one. We’ve installed thousands of PGT windows and doors, and our installers can vouch for the overall quality and reliability of their products.
