Insulating Your Home to Save Money
Window insulation is immensely important for your home’s energy efficiency. Windows that have poor insulation let more heat pass through them, making your home more susceptible to temperature changes throughout the day. This, in turn, makes your home’s air conditioning system have to work harder to maintain a comfortable temperature.
By improving window insulation, you can reduce the strain you put on your AC and, consequently, reduce how much energy it uses. This helps you save money on your monthly electric bill without having to sacrifice comfort and convenience.
What Is U-Factor?
U-Factor is a metric that measures the insulative quality of a window or door. This value is typically measured on a scale of 0.2 (best insulation) to 1.2 (worst insulation) and is a critical aspect of a window’s overall energy efficiency.

What Are U Factor Windows?
U-factor window is a term we use to refer to windows that have an extremely low u factor value. These windows do an excellent job of insulating your home against the heat and keeping the cooler AC air in:
How U-Factor Is Determined
Windows are tested by National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) certified laboratories to measure rate of heat transfer.
Installation Affects Insulation
When putting in a U-factor window, it’s important to ensure the window is installed correctly to maximize energy efficiency.
What Affects U-Factor
Window features such as multiple glass panes, argon gas fills, sealants, etc. can all affect a window’s energy efficiency.
Solar Heat Gain Coefficient
The solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) complements U factor by measuring how much heat is let in from sunlight hitting the window.
Dark Tints =/= Better
A dark tint on a window does not necessarily improve insulation. Some dark coatings may actually be worse for preventing heat transference.
The Potential Cost Savings
Low U-factor windows help reduce your energy costs by better insulating your home from the hot air outside and keeping the cold air in so your AC is more efficient.

Why You Should Replace ALL of Your Windows & Doors
When you’re upgrading your home’s fenestration (i.e., your windows and doors) to improve energy efficiency, it’s important to replace as many of your windows and exterior doors as possible with more energy-efficient ones. Why? Because, if you don’t replace all of your windows, the older, less efficient ones will be a point where your home loses energy efficiency.
To get the maximum benefit out of replacing your home’s windows and doors, you need to replace all of them at once. The closer you are to a whole home window replacement, the better the results you’ll see!

I reached out to Karoly for new sliding windows in my florida room and two exterior doors. Karoly came out and spent quite a while getting all the measurements right. That makes you feel good. When the installers came out, two days and done. Windows look great and the doors are solid and close tight. Everything is now impact and hurricane rated. I got my insurance discount. Thanks Karoly!+0Posted on Google![]()

I am very hard to please as I pretty much expect close to perfection. From a serious point I just want a TEAM that cares and gives it their best. Mistakes happen. However today I had Hurricane windows placed by Karoly. Actually from the very beginning it was like dealing with a family. In all my dealing with different companies A/C etc they far outshined any company I have ever dealt with. My techs were Vili, Zoli and Christian. They gave 150%, were very clean, cared about our house and did exquisite workmanship. 1,000% incredible and guess what they are not my relatives. LOLPosted on Google![]()

I will never be able to brag enough about how superior this company is. My husband and I interviewed at least seven window companies, all full of similar products of PGT or other hurricane safe Windows. We became window experts on our own with the knowledge we absorbed comparing apples to apples. Karoly was the final company we met with and Austin presentation was simple and he showed us a sample and did all the measurements. He explained the Simonton brand very well and the warranty they offer cannot be beat. We visited their showroom and met with Jesse to really look at products. Our decision was quick and easy and the price was better than their competitors. We completed all the paperwork with Richy and Angela and the rest of the wonderful staff. Installation day came and we met the fantastic installers that were so kind and clean. In 3 days our job was done. The day after that inspector came and passed us and one week later Karoly came back to complete final installation of some parts and now it’s all finished. These windows have changed our home completely. Not only did we work with the best contractor and save money we also gained a more beautiful home and it’s so quiet! No barking dogs or loud traffic or thunder anymore just peaceful tranquility!!! Thank you everyone at Karoly for making us so happy!!! I promise to call you again for all my other houses!! This was the best thing we’ve ever done without a doubt . Sincerely, Cheryl & Doug Sigmon+2Posted on Google![]()

After researching a few companies, I decided to go with Karoly. They replaced 19 windows and 3 sliders with Sinomton Stormbreaker Plus 300VL and Simonton Maxview. I enjoyed reading the information they had on their website and pleased to see this is a family owned business with emphasis on quality work and customer satisfaction. Employees were pleasant and professional and answered my questions. It has only been almost 2 years since installation and from my experience thus far, I would highly recommend Karoly.Posted on Google![]()

From start to finish, everyone was professional, friendly, and truly cared about doing the job right. The installation crews were outstanding. They were hardworking, respectful of my home, paid attention to every detail, and the quality of their workmanship was exceptional. I'm extremely pleased with the quality of the window replacement, the beautiful new doors, and the finished results. I was so impressed with the company that I've already recommended Karoly Windows & Doors to several of my neighbors. It's refreshing to work with a company that delivers exactly what they promise. U Factor Windows FAQs
How Does the 30% Tax Credit for Energy-Efficient Windows Work?
If you install energy efficiency improvements in your home, you may qualify for a tax credit on 30% of what you spent (worth up to $3,200 total) through the IRS’ Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit.
Windows can qualify for up to $600 in tax credits, and doors for $250 per door (up to $500 total). You can claim the credit for each year in which you make energy efficiency improvements to your home.
However, to claim the credit, the item being installed must be made by a qualifying manufacturer. Additionally, the home must be your primary residence in the United States.
What Is U Factor?
U-factor is a measurement of how well a window insulates the home. This is typically measured on a scale from 0.2 (best insulation) to 1.2 (worst insulation), according to the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC). This has a direct impact on the energy efficiency of the home.
Homes with better insulation won’t let in as much heat, making them more energy efficient in Florida. How? Because, if your home isn’t getting as much heat or letting out your cooled air, your air conditioning system won’t have to work as hard. This means it needs less energy to cool your home and keep it comfortable.
Does Florida Have U Factor Requirements for Windows?
Yes, if you want to meet ENERGY STAR compliance standards. There is a maximum allowable u factor rating limit for your windows to meet.
Much of Florida is a “Climate Zone 2” area. So, the highest U factor allowable for wall windows for a home in our home state is 0.40, and skylights in the area can have a maximum U factor of 0.65 and be considered sufficiently energy efficient to meet ENERGY STAR standards for the area.
What’s a Good U Factor for Windows in My Home?
A “good” U-factor for a Florida home would be somewhere between 0.30 and 0.40, as that would be enough to limit the transfer of thermal energy between your home and the outdoors.
However, that’s not the optimum U factor for windows in the southern climate zone as denoted by ENERGY STAR. The ideal U-factor for windows in Hillsborough County, for example, would be equal to or less than 0.21 to meet ENERGY STAR’s “Most Efficient” criteria and be eligible for tax rebates.
What’s R-Value?
Similar to how U factor works for windows, R-value is a term that is used to measure the insulative qualities of materials in your home. Some energy efficiency experts or contractors who deal with general home upgrades might reference R-value instead of U-Factor. However, there is an easy way to find the R-value of a window based on its U factor rating.
To determine the R-value for a window from its U-factor, simply divide 1 by the window’s U-factor value.
For example, a window with a U-factor of .40 would have an R-value of 2.5 (1 ➗ 0.40 = 2.5).
Unlike with U-factor, with R-value, the higher the number, the better the insulation quality of the material/object in question. So, a window with an R value of 3 is better at insulating your home than a window with an R value of 1.
The NFRC doesn’t use R factor when discussing window insulation. So, it’s not a term you’ll see often from those who specialize in window installation.
How Is a Window’s U Factor Certified?
Window U-factor values are determined through a series of tests conducted by NFRC-accredited laboratories. A manufacturer will send a sample of their window products to these facilities, where they’ll be subjected to a battery of tests to determine their u-factor.
The laboratories will then send the test results to the manufacturer and to an NFRC-licensed Inspection Agency (IA). The IA will then check the results and may issue a Certification Authorization Report to the manufacturer, which will then be allowed to put the NFRC Label on their window products.
Does U-Factor Affect My Energy Costs?
Yes. The u factor rating of your windows can affect your energy costs.
How much money you save by upgrading to better u-factor windows depends on what your home’s cooling costs are. Larger homes that need more power to cool will see a larger benefit from upgrading their windows than smaller homes with a lower AC power consumption rate.
The windows and doors of a home are where the most heat is transferred. So, upgrading windows to glass with strong insulative properties may provide the largest improvement to energy efficiency.
However, other insulation in the home, particularly along your roof or attic space, remains important for making the most out of your energy efficiency upgrades.
Are There Other Metrics to Track for Window Energy Efficiency?
Yes! While U factor can give you a solid idea of the energy efficiency of your windows, it isn’t the only statistic to consider. Another key metric to track is SHGC—the solar heat gain coefficient. This measures how much of the sun’s heat gets through the window.
The smaller the SHGC value is, the less the sun will heat up your home through that window. To maximize your energy efficiency and meet the Most Efficient criteria set by the ENERGY STAR program, your windows must have a U factor value of 0.21 or less and an SHGC value of 0.23 or less.
What Makes for a Better U Factor in Windows?
Wondering what features of a window help it have a better u-factor rating than other windows? There are numerous window design features that can help improve a window’s insulative quality, enhancing its u factor:
- Multiple Glass Panes. More panes of glass in a window sash help to improve the U factor for a window by acting as an air gap that prevents thermal transfer.
- Argon Gas Fills. As a gas that’s denser than air, argon enhances the ‘thermal break’ created by having multiple panes of glass.
- Nonmetallic Frames. Metals like aluminum have a very high thermal conductivity, meaning they transfer heat very quickly and easily. For example, if you compare aluminum (the most common metal used for residential windows) to vinyl, aluminum transfers heat over 900 times faster than vinyl—160 W/m K for aluminum vs 0.17W/m K for vinyl (Source: IRB Fraunhofer, though the exact values can vary depending on the alloy of aluminum used). Windows with vinyl frames will be inherently more energy efficient than ones with aluminum frames.
