Sliding Window vs Double Hung Window: Which Is Best?

sliding window vs double hung windows

Replacing all of the windows in your home is a great chance to change things up and try out new window styles to better meet your needs and revamp your home’s appearance a bit. But choosing the right kind of window for each opening of your home can be more challenging than you might think. Today, we’re going to compare a sliding window vs double hung window option for your home so you can pick out when each type of window would be the best fit for a specific opening of your home.

First off, let’s define what a sliding window is and what a double hung window is:

What Is a Sliding Window?

A sliding window is pretty self explanatory by its name: it’s a type of window that has a movable sash that goes side to side to open or close the window. However, there are different ways for sliding windows to operate. Some are defined as XO, OX, or XOX, depending on how many sashes the window has and how they’re arranged.

A sliding window has at least two sashes, one of which will be operable and one of which will be fixed. The operable sash will have a sash lock mounted to it to keep the window shut and rollers along the bottom of the sash to let it roll smoothly from one side to the other on its built-in track.

The design of a sliding window has some similarities to a sliding glass door, albeit on a smaller scale and the locks are located on the window’s sash rather than in or near the handle.

What Do the X’s and O’s Mean?

In sliding windows the X and O figures refer to which sashes are movable and which ones aren’t when viewed from the outside of the home.

For example, an XO sliding window would have a sash that, when viewed from outside, would open from the left and a fixed sash on the right. This can be a bit confusing for some homeowners, as from the inside of the home, the operable window sash would be the one on the right and the fixed sash is on the left.

An XOX window would have a fixed central sash, and movable sashes on either side of the window. Typically, windows with this arrangement of movable and fixed sashes have a larger central sash while the sashes on either side are smaller so they don’t impact one another when both are open at the same time.

What Is a Double Hung Window?

A double hung window is a type of hanging window that has two movable sashes the move up and down within the window’s frame. This allows homeowners to open the window from the top or the bottom as they prefer, which some may find more convenient.

For example, a taller homeowner might want to open the top sash of the window since it’s easier for them to reach that window ‘lift’ (i.e., handle) than the bottom sash’s lift. Meanwhile, others may find reaching for and opening the window from the bottom sash more comfortable and convenient.

Another convenience-enhancing feature of modern double-hung windows is the tilt shoe/pivot bar mechanism. This allows the windows to be tilted inwards for easier cleaning from the inside of the home.

The weight of the sash is offset by a counterbalance mechanism in the window, which is what makes the window easier to open and close, though there are limits to how much weight can be offset.

Sliding Window vs Double Hung Window: Pros of a Sliding Window

So, what are the advantages of a sliding window over a double-hung window? The biggest one for a sliding window of any size is likely to be ease of use.

With a sliding window, the window is moving on rollers. The user only has to supply enough force to get the window sash moving. So long as the tracks and the wheels are clean and free of debris, the sliding window will roll easily almost regardless of its size… similar to how easily a sliding glass door is to open and close.

Compare this to a hanging window like a double hung window. At standard sizes, hanging windows are also fairly easy to move. They slide up and down in their tracks without difficulty. However, to operate that window, you’re fighting against the weight of the sash.

In a smaller window, this is negligible and easily offset by the counterbalance mechanism in the window. However, as hanging windows get bigger, they get exponentially heavier, and thus exponentially harder to lift open or shut.

This makes sliding glass windows a better fit for extremely large window openings in the home. Windows above kitchen sinks often fit this description, being several feet wide and a few feet tall to provide more ventilation when opened.

Sliding Window vs Double Hung Window: Pros of a Double Hung Window

The biggest advantage of a double hung window over a sliding window is ease of maintenance. With a double-hung window, you can tilt the window sashes into the home to easily clean both sides of the glass, move the majority of the window sash out of the way of the tracks to give them a deep clean when necessary, and less detritus tends to accumulate in the vertical parts of the window frame compared to the sliding window’s track.

This is especially useful for windows on the second floor or higher of a building. To clean a second-story sliding window thoroughly, you’d either need specialized tools or you’d have to get up on a ladder to give the outdoor-facing portion of the window a clean and get a vacuum into the portion of the track the movable sash slides into to remove any dirt or debris buildup.

Sliding Windows vs Double Hung Windows: Which Is Best for Your Home?

So, which type of window is better for your home? The answer is: “it depends.”

Different window types are more or less suitable for different window openings. When choosing to install a sliding window vs a double hung window, it’s important to think about the overall size of the window opening, its placement in the home, and your personal preferences.

For example, say you have a window opening that is only 2’ wide and 5’-6’ tall. In this case, we’d definitely recommend the double-hung window over the sliding window. The sheer narrowness of the window opening would not be a good fit for a sliding window.

However, if the window opening was 6’ wide and 4’ tall or shorter, then the sliding window would be our first recommendation. At this width and size, the sliding window would be easier to operate than a double hung window (or, we’d recommend the use of mull bars to break up the opening into several smaller ones).

Both kinds of windows can have window opening control devices (WOCDs), a must-have for homes with small children who may attempt to crawl out of a window. These devices prevent windows from opening wide enough to allow a child through, but can still be disengaged to allow the window to be used as an emergency exit if it’s large enough for that purpose.

Note: The FGIA updated their specifications for evaluating operable windows with WOCDs in 2025, so be sure to check with your window installer to see if the WOCDs they offer are compliant with the current standard.

Either type of window can be a great option for your home, it’s just a matter of knowing what kind of window will be the best fit for a given window opening.

More importantly, you need to make sure that whoever installs your new windows does the job the right way, using the right tools to ensure that your windows will last for decades of rigorous use.
