Updated October 2026: this guide now reflects the 2026–27 program year.
Attention Florida homeowners: the My Safe Florida Home program is accepting applications for the 2026–27 fiscal year! If you haven’t already, we strongly encourage you to go to the program’s website, create an account and sign up for a free wind-mitigation inspection!
Why sign up now? What is the My Safe Florida Home (MSFH) program? How does it work?
Let’s dive into the MSFH program and what you need to know about it!
Does the My Safe Florida Home Grant Pay For Home Improvements Up Front?
No. The MSFH program does not pay for your wind mitigation upgrades up front. You must pay for the work yourself, then you get reimbursed up to $10,000 for your wind mitigation expenses.
So, you make improvements to your home, then the program provides you with money to reimburse you for your expenses.
What Is the My Safe Florida Home Application Process?
The MSFH program has a two-step application process:
Step 1: Apply for a Free Wind Mitigation Inspection
Before you can apply for a grant under the MSFH program, you must first apply for a free wind mitigation inspection on the My Safe Florida Home website and receive a report. If you haven’t already, you’ll be asked to create a portal account to begin the report application process.
Step 2: Apply for a Wind Mitigation Grant
Once you have your inspection report and the program invites you to apply, you can go online to the My Safe Florida Home website and apply for an upgrade grant.
What Are the Requirements to Apply for a Free Wind Mitigation Inspection?
The MSFH program has several eligibility requirements that you and your home will need to meet in order to qualify for the program:
- The home must be a single-family home, detached or attached (such as a townhome), not over three stories.
- The home must be ‘site-built’ and owner-occupied (cannot be a mobile home).
- The homeowner must have been granted a homestead exemption. Specifically under the Florida Statutes Chapter 196.031 (Exemption of Homesteads).
The following structures are NOT eligible for the MSFH program:
- Multi-family homes like apartments or duplexes.
- Condominiums
- Cooperatives
- Retirement homes
- Mobile homes
- Vacation homes & Rental properties

What Are the Eligibility Requirements for a Grant Under the MFSH Program?

Okay, let’s say you qualify for the wind mitigation inspection. Does that mean you qualify for the grant? Not necessarily. There are some eligibility criteria that you’ll need to meet for your home to qualify for a grant under the My Safe Florida Home program:
- Completing an MSFH wind-mitigation inspection within the past 24 months.
- The home must have an insured valuation of $700,000 or less.
- The building permit application for the home’s initial construction must predate January 1, 2008.
- You must meet the program’s low- or moderate-income guidelines.
- You must provide the name and license number of the contractor performing wind mitigation work on your home.
- You must agree to a final inspection after the work is completed.
- You must agree to provide the MSFH program “any and all information received from the Homeowner’s insurer identifying the discounts realized by the Homeowner because of the Improvements funded through the program.”
Who Can Apply for Benefits Under the My Safe Florida Home Program?
For the 2026–27 fiscal year, the program is accepting applications. Grants are generally for homeowners who meet the program’s low- or moderate-income guidelines, and the State prioritizes applicants by income and age. Only the State can determine eligibility. Check your status at mysafeflhome.com or call 850-427-2559.
Why Should I Apply for a Grant as Soon as Possible?
If you’re making wind mitigation upgrades to your home, you should apply for the My Safe Florida Home program grant sooner rather than later. Why? Some reasons include:
- Funding Is Limited. The program’s funding is set by the Florida Legislature and is limited, so grant money may not be available to every eligible homeowner who applies.
- Applicants Are Prioritized. The State prioritizes applicants by income and age, and funding is limited, so it pays to get your account and inspection started early.
- The Free Wind Mitigation Inspection Takes Time. Even before you’re invited to apply for a grant, you should get the free wind mitigation inspection so that your report is ready when it’s your turn. This will help you save time so you don’t miss out on this program.
Ultimately, it’s free money for any homeowner who was already making upgrades to protect their home from hurricanes. There’s no reason to avoid checking if you could qualify for a rebate on your home improvements.
What Upgrades Does the My Safe Florida Home Program Cover?
The grant will only cover wind mitigation upgrades that are identified in your free wind mitigation inspection report. Some examples of home upgrades that the program will cover include:
- A secondary water resistance barrier.
- Opening protection.
- Roof-to-wall connection strengthening.
- Roof-to-deck strengthening.
The “Opening Protection” can include things like installing impact windows and doors to upgrade your home’s resistance to hurricane-force winds.
If you’re looking to improve the “opening protection” for your home, Karoly Windows & Doors is here to help!
How Much Money Can I Get from the MSFH Program Grant?
The program offers matching grants of up to $10,000, and the amount depends on how much you spend on eligible upgrades. For most eligible homeowners, the State contributes $2 for every $1 the homeowner contributes, so a $10,000 grant corresponds to $15,000 or more of eligible work. Low-income homeowners may receive up to $10,000 without a match.
