Is It Cheaper to Replace All Windows at Once or Some at a Time?

Is it cheaper to replace all windows at once, or do a few at a time?

When considering window replacement for your home, one of the first things you’re probably going to check is how much it costs to replace your windows. Then, you’ll likely want to look at ways to make replacing your windows more affordable, asking things like “is it cheaper to replace all windows at once in my home or is it cheaper to just replace a few at a time?”

There are arguments for both ways of doing things.

Let’s break down what the actual cost of doing your whole home window replacement all at once is vs the cost of replacing windows a handful at a time:

Is It Cheaper to Replace All Windows at Once? The Upfront Cost

The big disadvantage of replacing all of the windows in your home at the same time is that it’s going to be a steeper upfront investment of time and money. Putting in more windows is going to cost more in parts and materials than doing them a few at a time.

For example, say that your home is an average, 1800 square foot home (Source: SpareFoot), with three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living room, and a kitchen. Each bedroom and bathroom has a single window large enough for egress, and the kitchen has two large window openings for ventilation, while the living room has a large sliding glass door to the backyard instead of a window. That’s seven window openings total, five of them on the larger side, with a couple of smaller awning windows in the bathrooms.

For argument’s sake, let’s say the cost to replace all of your windows at once with the windows you want would come out to $24,000, but doing just the four of the windows (the two smaller bathroom windows and the two larger kitchen windows) comes out to $13,000.

On the upfront cost alone, the smaller window job would cost about $11,000 less. Note that this is purely an illustrative example, and not an actual quote, since there are a lot of variables that could affect the cost of installation (window placement, exact size of the windows, what kind of windows you’re installing, etc.).

But, it was still more than half the cost. Why? There could be several reasons, such as minimum overhead costs or lack of discounts.

Is It Cheaper to Replace All Windows at Once? Minimum Overhead Costs & Other Basics

Before starting a window installation, there are a few things that any window replacement company will need to do, such as:

Submitting a Permit for Work

New window installations need to be approved by your local government through a permitting process, or else the work may be subjected to a ‘stop work order.’ If such an order is issued, you may be forced to uninstall your new windows and get them replaced.

This is why it’s important to always work with a reliable installer who knows the permit application process for your area and always makes sure that your legal ‘i’s’ are dotted and your ‘t’s’ are crossed to prevent issues.

Travel Costs for Parts & Labor

To start work on your home, the installation crew will need to transport themselves and your new windows to your home, which incurs certain minimum costs that have to be taken into account. In some cases, when a home is particularly far away from the location of the business doing the installation, the work crew might need to stay at a nearby hotel/motel to cut down on travel time if the installation takes longer than a single day.

When a window replacement project is broken up into multiple stages, the shipping costs for the windows increases compared to shipping all of your windows at once.

Preinstallation Preparation and Post Work Cleanup

Before work can begin, the installers will need to make some preparations at your home. The exact preparations may vary depending on your home and where the windows are being installed, but at the very least, your installers will need to set up their tools and tarps/sheets to protect the areas around your new windows.

Then, once the work is complete, the installers will need to clean up after themselves to make sure your home is left in the pristine condition it started in. Or, at least, you’d hope that your installers would clean up after themselves once the work’s done!

This means that there will always need to be some budget set aside for this labor.

Is It Cheaper to Replace All Windows at Once? Whole Home Window Installation Discounts

Many window installation companies like to incentivize bigger window installation projects rather than smaller ones. So, they may give you a better price per window if you’re willing to get more windows at once.

Some window offers may even give you a free window or door for installing a set number of windows, discounted rates on installation and windows for ordering so many windows, free hardware/feature upgrades, etc.

It’s always worth asking the window replacement company if they have any special deals or discounts for installing more windows rather than fewer windows.

For example, say that you ordered seven windows and received $75 off the price of each window, a free impact door worth up to $2,500, and $500 off a sliding glass door to completely upgrade your home’s windows and doors all at once. That would be a savings of $3,525 off the overall cost of installation.

If you were to do the installation in smaller chunks, then you’d miss out on the opportunity to get the discounts, raising your total installation cost.

Is It Cheaper to Replace All Windows at Once? Window Price Fluctuations

The cost of windows can change over time. Every so often, window companies announce price increases for their windows due to market factors beyond their control, such as inflation. The rate of inflation between September 2024 and 2025 for energy costs alone was 2.8%, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

In other words, for every $100 that a manufacturer spent on keeping the lights on and running their manufacturing equipment in September of 2024, they would be spending $102.80.

In addition to rising energy costs, the cost of goods for the parts and materials to make a window can increase as well. That naturally has an impact on costs. For example, Cornerstone Building Brands recently announced a broad range of price increases for different window types and brands.

When the prices of windows and doors go up, so too will the price of installation.

Is It Cheaper to Replace All Windows at Once? Lost Energy Efficiency

One of the most common reasons to do a whole home window replacement is to improve your home’s overall energy efficiency. Changing out your windows from older, less efficient windows to newer ENERGY STAR-rated windows can have a massive impact on your energy costs.

For example, a Florida homeowner who changes from single-pane clear glass windows to ENERGY STAR v7.0 compliant windows can save over $560 a year on their energy bills, according to data from an ENERGY STAR study.

However, if you aren’t replacing all of the windows in your home at the same time, you’re losing out on the maximum energy efficiency benefits that you could have realized. The longer it takes for you to finish replacing all of your windows, the more money you’ll lose to higher energy costs.

Is It Cheaper to Replace All Windows at Once? Financing Costs

Say you decide to put your window installation on credit or apply for financing to get your windows installed. This is one case where doing all of your windows at the same time could add to your costs depending on the type of window financing you use.

Let’s say your window installation is $24,000 total for your whole home. If you put that on a credit card with a 19.99% APR (annual percentage rate), that would mean paying just under $400/month in interest (at least on the first month ([24,000 x 19.99%]/12 = 399.8), although the interest would shrink the more you pay it down.

Meanwhile, putting a partial window replacement job costing $13,000 on the same card would incur about $216.55 of interest a month (shrinking as you pay it off). By breaking the job up into smaller chunks and paying it off as you can afford it, you can minimize the impact of interest on your household budget.

However, putting window installation on your credit card isn’t your only option (and it’s usually far from the best option, too). Window financing offers that have things like $0 down, no-interest introductory periods can make it easier to absorb the cost of installing new windows.

With some 0% interest offers, if you pay off the total amount of the window installation cost in full before the introductory 0% interest rate period is over, you don’t end up paying any interest while getting the benefits of being able to install all of your new windows sooner rather than later.

If you want to avoid financing altogether to pay cash for your window installations with money you’ve saved up, then doing your window installations a few at a time rather than all at once might make sense. Though, you would still spend less overall if you did all the windows at the same time.

Is It REALLY Cheaper to Replace All of My Windows If I Don’t Use a Reliable Installation Company?

Rather than asking “is it cheaper to replace all windows at once or do a few at a time?” the better question might be “Who can I trust to do my window installation right?”

Why? Because, regardless of how much money you save on any window installation through special offers, locking in lower prices for service before labor and material costs go up, or replacing a few windows at a time, if you end up having to replace your new windows all over again, it’s still a massive waste of your time and money.

To really save money in the long run, you need your new windows to be installed the right way the first time, whether you do four windows or forty windows.
