Why Should I Upgrade to Impact Windows?
Impact windows are critical for homeowners living in wind borne debris (WBD) regions because they face a high risk of exposure to hurricane-force winds in excess of 140 miles per hour during any given year.
Hurricane impact windows help protect your home from extreme wind pressure and impacts with flying debris that hurricanes can pick up and throw.
Regular, ‘non-impact’ windows break much more easily under strong wind pressure and that brings risk of extra damage to your home’s interior–up to and including the risk of total structural collapse.
Can a Broken Window REALLY Cause My Home to Collapse?
Unfortunately, yes. It is possible that a window breaking could result in total structural collapse in homes that would otherwise have survived intact.
Why?
Because, when a window is broken, it allows the hurricane’s winds to act directly on the interior walls of the home. It can also lift up the roof of the structure, making it easier for the wind to rip the roof off the home and cause massive damage to the interior.
Interior walls typically aren’t as strong as exterior walls are. When the wind can act directly on them, they are much more prone to collapse in a major storm.
Beyond the risk of immediate structural damage, broken windows can let in water, storm debris, and pests like rats, termites, and more, which can then go on to cause significant damage to the home interior that impacts its structural integrity over time.
What Are the Benefits of Impact Windows Beyond Hurricane Resistance?
In addition to being resilient against hurricane damage, impact windows and doors can actually serve to make a home more energy-efficient, deter would-be home invaders, and even enhance curb appeal (and thus, value if you ever sell your residence).
How does an impact window deter home invaders? By frustrating brute-force attempts to break into the home. Google “CCTV of robbers stopped by impact glass” and you’ll see countless examples of would-be thieves being forced to give up their attempts to rob a business after-hours because they couldn’t get past the glass.
With multiple layers of impact glass, flexible laminate, and strong seals between the glass panes, impact windows can make a home much more energy-efficient. The added layers help block the transfer of thermal energy between the outdoors and your home. Adding a ‘solar control’ low-e glass coating to the glass helps make it even more energy efficient by blocking out the sun’s heat.
The curb appeal speaks for itself. Vinyl impact windows don’t show wear and tear as readily as painted wood or aluminum windows do, since the material is the same color throughout. This helps make your home more attractive and thus, more appealing and valuable to potential buyers.
How Are Impact Windows Tested for Hurricane Resistance?
In Florida, a window or door product is tested via a battery of both large and small missile impact tests.
The Large Missile Impact Test fires a nine-pound 2×4 at the window at a speed of 50 mph, then subjects the window to cyclic pressure loads to see if there’s any air leakage after the impact.
In the Small Missile Impact Test, small steel balls are fired at different parts of the window and its frame before the cyclic wind test.
If the window fails either test, then it will not be approved as an impact window product.
Why Use Vinyl Impact Windows Over Aluminum Ones?
So, why do we use vinyl impact windows rather than aluminum ones for our customers? There are a few reasons:
- Energy Efficiency. Vinyl is much less thermally conductive than steel or aluminum is. To help our customers save on energy bills for decades to come, we strongly recommend vinyl impact windows.
- Ease of Maintenance. We know that your time is valuable and you don’t want to have to keep cleaning off your window frames every time it’s a little rainy out. Because vinyl doesn’t rust or rot like metal or wood, it’s far easier to maintain in the long run than other types of windows.
- Maximizing Useful Life. As mentioned earlier, PVC (vinyl) doesn’t rust like aluminum or rot like wood does. In Florida, especially if you live near the salty sea air, exposed metal can rust incredibly fast, wearing out your windows, causing them to stick, and hurting their visual appeal. Also, when the surface of vinyl is scratched, the material underneath is still the same color, so minor scratches don’t show as readily as they would on painted wood or metal.
- Cost Savings. In addition to lowering your energy bill for years to come, vinyl windows can be more cost effective to install up front. While a vinyl impact window does have an aluminum rod or bar deep under the vinyl top to reinforce the frame, it’s much less than would be used in an aluminum metal window frame. This helps to keep the price of the window down some so that it’s more affordable for you to purchase. And, since vinyl lasts much longer than wood, particularly in humid climates like Florida, it’s more cost-effective in the long run than wood, too!
Would Replacing the Glass in My Windows Make Them Impact-Resistant?
No.
For windows, impact resistance is a system. It requires that every part of the window is engineered to maximize its survivability in the face of extreme wind pressure and direct strikes from flying debris. It’s far more than just having “impact glass” in a window frame.
Notably, the frame of the window needs to be impact resistant, the window sash typically includes multiple layers of glass so that if the top layer breaks, the interior layers can survive, there should be a layer of flexible laminate to protect the interior of the home from glass shards when the top layer breaks and to flex with further impacts and wind pressure without breaking… The list of innovations in impact windows goes on and on.
Simply taking the normal glass in a non-impact window and replacing it with impact glass will not make the window impact-resistant. So, if you’re looking to upgrade your home to improve its impact resistance, be sure to perform a true upgrade by fully replacing your windows and doors with impact-rated ones.
Can Installation Quality Affect Impact Resistance?
Yes! The overall quality of your impact window installation can have an enormous impact on how impact resistant your windows are.
For example, say that an installer skimps on the shims for your windows, using poor-quality wooden shims or window bucks instead of composite shims/bucks that are rot-resistant? If the shim or buck rots in the frame, it will no longer provide support to the window, making it less secure in the opening. This lets the wind push on the frame more easily, causing it to flex more and compromising its ability to remain in the opening.
Or, say they don’t apply the right weatherstripping or sealant around the frame. That could create a moisture intrusion problem, letting water and worse into your home and compromising the structure around the window opening.
Do I Have to Replace ALL of My Windows & Doors?
Yes. To qualify for the I.M.P.A.C.T Program, you must replace all of the exterior windows and doors in your home with impact-rated products.
This is because the goal of the Program is to help protect your home from hurricanes by completely protecting your home. If even one opening isn’t properly protected, your home is vulnerable to hurricanes.
An added benefit of whole home impact window and door replacement is that it can allow you to qualify for homeowners insurance discounts.
