How Much Damage Can a Hurricane Cause?

How much damage can a hurricane do?

How much damage can a hurricane cause? This is a question that’s crossed the minds of most homeowners in Florida at least once. Usually right after a hurricane is spotted off the coast of our state and starts its slow march towards the panhandle.

The general rule of thumb is that the higher the hurricane falls on the Saffir-Simpson scale, the more damage it can and will do. But, the actual damage calculation is far more complex than a simple “more wind speed = more damage.”

There are many factors that can influence the damage caused by hurricanes and the risk your home faces. And wind damage is far from the only risk you face.

Let’s break down risk factors, mitigation factors, and take a look at some examples of past storms to help you better understand how much damage a hurricane can do and what you can do to limit your exposure to risk:

How Much Damage Can a Hurricane Cause Based on Wind Speed?

Wind speed is one of the most significant factors affecting the amount of damage a hurricane can do to your home. The faster the winds, the greater the chance for catastrophic damage.

The Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale breaks hurricanes down into five categories based on wind speed:

  • 74-95 mph: Category 1
  • 96-110 mph: Category 2
  • 111-129 mph: Category 3
  • 130-156 mph: Category 4
  • 157+ mph: Category 5

Even as the “weakest” hurricanes, Category 1 storms can still do significant damage to an unprepared home. Here, the majority of the damage will be in the form of missing roof shingles/tiles or damaged fascia and gutters. Some tree branches may come loose, and small, light objects could be picked up and thrown. However, most well-prepared homes should weather these storms with minimal damage.

Category 2 storms bring more dangerous winds and will often cause significant roof and siding damage to homes. Some trees with shallow roots may be partially or wholly uprooted and fall over.

Category 3 storms tend to cause widespread damage to homes in areas throughout the hurricane zone. Less well-prepared homes may lose their roof decking or experience window blow-outs/breaks. Power lines and trees may be knocked down on top of structures as well.

Category 4 storms are thankfully rare, but bring widespread damage to Florida whenever they appear. Even well-built homes may suffer significant damage to the roof and siding. Less well-prepared structures are likely to be outright destroyed by severe winds.

Category 5 storms will destroy many homes. The aftermath of these storms typically leaves a trail of broken buildings that have been torn down to the foundation. Even well-prepared homes can be heavily damaged. When a home survives a category 5 storm, it’s often because every possible wind mitigation improvement has been made, combined with other mitigating factors.

What Factors Can Limit How Much Damage a Hurricane Does?

There are many factors that can affect the damage a hurricane ultimately causes to your home beyond just the wind speed. This includes things like:

  • Local Topography: Homes in hilly areas may be partially protected against winds or against flooding, depending on elevation in relation to the hills. Homes on hilltops tend to have more exposure to wind, but are less likely to become flooded. Additionally, features like rivers, lakes, and other large bodies of water may increase the risk of water damage from storm surge. Additionally, concave terrain may allow flood waters to remain pooled in place long after the storm has passed.
  • Tree Density: Trees in the area can act as a windbreak, keeping the full force of hurricane winds near the ground from affecting your home. Denser forests are also less likely to have many trees get uprooted by severe storms than isolated trees. In more urban areas, other buildings around your home can serve as the windbreak that mitigates the impacts of a storm.
  • Wind Mitigation Improvements: This includes enhancements made to the home to help make it less vulnerable to wind damage. This includes things like reinforcing roof-to-wall attachments, installing impact-rated windows and doors, and replacing roofing with impact-rated variants.
  • Regional Debris: Areas with lots of loose debris may be prone to more flying debris during a major storm, increasing the risk of direct impacts to windows that can cause them to shatter. The more trash or other debris there is in an area, the more likely it is that your windows will suffer a direct hit.
  • Distance from the Shoreline: The closer your home is to the coast, the greater your risk of facing the strongest winds and highest storm surge. Hurricanes tend to weaken significantly after making landfall, resulting in a rapid decline of their category on the Saffir-Simpson scale. The further inland your home is, the more likely it is that the storm will be weaker by the time it reaches your home.
  • Offshore Sloping: According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the shape and slope of the ocean shelf can impact storm surge significantly during a hurricane. A gradual, mostly flat slope allows storms to push more water inshore, increasing the risk of storm surge. Meanwhile, sharp, steep slopes tend to minimize storm surge risks.

What Kinds of Damage Can a Hurricane Cause?

Hurricane damage can come in a variety of forms caused by high-speed winds, storm surge, flying debris, or a combination of these factors.

Roof Damage

One of the most common issues with even Category 1 hurricanes is roof damage. This can be anything from shingles being pulled off by wind gusts or the entire roof deck being pried from the home by sustained high-speed winds.

This type of damage can be mitigated by preventative measures such as using impact-rated roofing shingles/tiles, inspecting and repairing roofing prior to a major storm, and reinforcing the roof’s connection to your home’s walls to create a continuous load path so the roof deck isn’t absorbing the entire force of a hurricane’s winds separately from the rest of the home.

Window Damage

Extreme wind speeds exert positive and negative pressure on windows in the windward and leeward sides of the home in equal measure. If wind pressures exceed the tolerance of the window, the window may rupture.

Additionally, strong hurricanes can pick up loose objects in the area and send them flying towards the home. When these objects make a direct impact on a window, it can cause the window to shatter.

Water Damage

Hurricanes often come with heavy rainfall or storm surge as strong winds pick up water and push it inland. This can lead to flooding that deposits dirty water in the home, leading to issues like compromised electrical systems, mold/mildew growth, and damage to furniture.

There are several modifications that you can make to your home to help prevent water damage. Making repairs to your roofing to eliminate leaks, installing impact-rated windows and outswing doors, and moving furniture and electronics off the ground floor of your home can all help mitigate your water damage risks.

Electrical Damage

Water intrusion can cause damage to wiring in your home, making your electrical systems unreliable or even make your circuit breaker trip as circuits short out. Additionally, high-speed winds can damage power lines in your area, causing a blackout until they get repaired.

For refrigerators, prolonged power loss can also lead to a loss of perishable foods, adding another expense to your storm damage costs.

Some in-home electrical damage can be mitigated by turning off electrical systems prior to a storm and taking measures to prevent flooding. However, damage to power lines and other external supply-side infrastructure is more difficult to prevent. For that, you may need to contact your local power company and report the outage and ask for an estimate of how long it will take to get power restored.

Past Examples of Hurricane Damage

Consequences of natural disaster. Kayak boat floating on flooded street surrounded by hurricane Ian rainfall flood waters homes in Florida residential area.

So, what kinds of damage have hurricanes of years past caused in Florida?

Hurricanes Helene and Milton

The most famous recent example would be the back-to-back hurricanes of Helene and Milton, two major storms that rocked Florida less than two weeks apart from one another.

Hurricane Helene, on its own, is estimated to have caused about $78.7 billion in damage, 175 direct deaths (18 in Florida alone), and 72 indirect deaths (16 in Florida) and was the 7th costliest hurricane in the United States (Source: National Hurricane Center). The storm made landfall near Perry, Florida as a Category 4 hurricane.

Hurricane Milton exacerbated the damage caused by Helene. Making landfall on October 9, 2024 near Siesta Key, Milton landed as a Category 3 storm hot on the heels of Helene. Milton spawned numerous tornadoes in its wake, including three EF-3 tornadoes and 25 EF-1 tornadoes and was estimated to have caused a further $34.3 billion in damage (Source: WPTV).

These storms knocked buildings down to their foundations, disrupted supply chains throughout the southeastern U.S., and took dozens of lives in Florida alone. Because of the one-two punch, relief efforts were interrupted, meaning that damage caused by the first storm hadn’t been fully remediated before the second storm hit.

Hurricane Andrew

Hurricane Andrew was described by the National Weather Service (NWS) “strongest and most devastating hurricane on record to hit southern Florida… the most expensive natural disaster in United States history, not to be surpassed until Hurricane Katrina 13 years later.” It impacted Miami-Dade county in 1992 as a Category 5 storm.

According to the NWS, Andrew destroyed over 25,000 homes and left 160,000 Americans homeless. The devastation was widespread because of the sheer force of the wind Andrew brought.

Hurricane Katrina

Hurricane Katrina caused over $108 billion in damage in the US, but it made landfall in Southern Florida as a mere Category 1 storm. However, after crossing from the Atlantic to the Gulf across the bottom-most portion of Florida, the storm rapidly intensified and moved north into Mississippi, making a second landfall as a Category 3 hurricane.

The storm brought significant flooding from storm surge and, when the wind hit New Orleans in Louisiana, levees separating the city from nearby Lake Pontchartrain broke. This caused roughly 80% of the city to flood according to the NWS.

While technically weaker than Andrew when it made landfall, Katrina caused significantly more damage. This highlights how it’s important to never underestimate the potential impacts of hurricanes.

Protect Your Home from the Damage Hurricanes Can Cause!

Worried about hurricane damage? Take the first step to protect your home by making wind mitigation improvements like installing impact-rated windows and doors for your home!

Impact windows help to minimize the risk of catastrophic wind damage by holding fast where other windows would break. This prevents wind pressure from being able to act on your home’s interior walls and the underside of your roof. This, in turn, significantly reduces the risk of sudden structural failure, moisture intrusion, and other storm damage risks.
